Mississippi Non-Profit Looks to Raise $15,000 via Indiegogo for the Launch of Classic Book Radio WMFH-LP.

New station will broadcast and stream classic literature.

 — Columbus, Mississippi, United States 25th Feb, 2014

Mississippi non-profit Classic Book Radio is starting a Low Power FM radio station (LPFM) which will broadcast readings from classic works of literature.

Last year the US Federal Communications Commission, for the first time in over a decade, accepted applications for new LPFM radio station licenses during a short window in October.

Classic Book Radio was established to build an FM station and broadcast classic audio-books from the archive at LibriVox.org. FCC approval has been acquired with an assigned frequency of 95.5 MHz and call letters WMFH-LP. The FCC station construction permit gives Classic Book Radio a deadline of 18 months to get on the air.

Christopher Howard, board chairman and founder of Classic Book Radio reports, “Our purpose is to promote literacy by broadcasting classic works of literature. We feel this can be an important tool for introducing people to the large body of quality English literature they might not otherwise experience, including timeless works from Aesop to Melville and from Shakespeare to Mark Twain.”

We understand that not everyone is an avid reader and that old, thick books can be intimidating. Unfortunately, approximately 15% of our community operates at a low literacy level and completely misses out on the conversation; they don’t even know what they are missing.”

Our goal is to be entertaining and interesting and raise a level of interest so that our listeners will want to read along and branch out to other works. Everything we will be broadcasting is available at no expense in text form on the Internet.”

Our programming content is normal people sitting down to read to you.”

Classic Book Radio, WMFH-LP, 95.5 has turned to crowd-funding to get their station on the air.

Their campaign will receive all funds raised even if the overall goal is not reached. Funding campaign ends: March 24, 2014 (11:59pm PT).
